Late last week I received some exciting news.  I’ve been hired on for a one-year reporter/photographer internship here at The Record!  This is a writing, photography and video position, so I’ll be expected to create work in all three aspects of the news media world.  I’m very, VERY excited about this opportunity, and admittedly nervous about the challenge of tackling all three mediums right out of the gate.  Fortunately, this newsroom is a never ending source of support and guidance from writers, photographers, deskers and editors alike.

Besides the excitement and relief at being employed for a year, I’m happy to be sticking around Kitchener-Waterloo.  This place has a lot to offer.  If anyone has visited the Waterloo or Wellington County areas they’ve probably come across the Old Order Mennonite community.  Wellington and St Jacobs has a significant population of this section of the Mennonite Church, who live fairly separate from the rest of the world.  Old Order members are spotted easily with their plain clothes.  The kids look like mini-adults.  Ironically, the point of the plain clothes is to not draw attention, to literally be PLAIN.  But a city kid like me sees something out of the ordinary, so I can’t help but take photos.  A couple of weeks ago I was at an assignment at the St Jacobs Stockyards during a cattle auction, so I grabbed the chance to shoot some photos of the participants and their families inside the auction.
