Kitchener and Waterloo were popular destinations for PM Harper just before and during the election campaign so I ended up taking a lot of photos of him in a pretty short period of time. He visited a couple weeks prior, and twice during the campaign. In March he was at the Kitchener Rangers game where I shot these photos.
I could tell he and Peter Braid (MP for Kitchener-Waterloo, on the left) were talking hockey, and while I figured Harper was explaining his reaction to the recent Chara vs. Pacioretty hit, I wasn’t completely sure. It didn’t feel quite right with the missing context, so I almost didn’t file the shots…but the moment was good, so I did.
Two editors called me separately to ask for the context after I filed the pics. I tried to get access to Braid (no way I was getting a chance to talk to Harper) but I was stonewalled by a PMO spokesperson. “I’m not going to ask about a personal conversation,” she said. Makes sense, I thought. But in the end our editors played it on A2, not too big, in a series and with a broad caption.

During the campaign Harper returned for a rally. I wrote this story and brought along my camera to take some pictures, including the obligatory bored crowd shots and yawning kids who were dragged to the rally in matching dresses shots.
The next day I wrote this story when Harper stuck around the region to watch his son play volleyball. A PMO spokesperson called me the morning after the rally to offer a ride to a photo-op, so I ended up on the media bus with a ride to the gym, shot the photos quick, and left in the media bus again.
Talented and hardworking Record photojournalist (and all-around nice guy) Mathew McCarthy started a year long portrait and multimedia project in January. It profiles interesting people in the region called People of Record. It’s important for you to look at because it’s awesome work.
It’s also important to check out, and share with like-minded friends, because this is another example of the strength of good photojournalism on a digital screen. To get it published online Mat and our photo ed had to jump through a few hoops, while Mat learned entirely new web skills on his own. The portraits run in the paper the same day the multimedia piece is released online.
The characters so far include a geocacher, retired running coach, 91-year-old sausage retailer and a Rabbi’s wife who helps run a Chabad House.
And if, by chance, you happen to know someone who lives in Waterloo Region that is worthy of a totally awesome portrait and multimedia story, than shoot Mat an email at mmccarthy (at) therecord.com You can follow him on Twitter @MathewMcCarthy
Sorry for never updating. Here are some pictures I took:

TheRecord.com is redesigned and online! Life is more fun with bigger pictures and a cleaner look!
Up on the new multimedia section is the One of Us story I made about a rock climber. Dan is an all-around wonderful guy. He was featured in the paper for a story in the summer about his goal to tackle the “seven summits”. Currently, he’s at four out of seven, with hopes to summit Everest next.
Here’s the link on TheRecord.com : Dan Johnson – Climber
I went out a few times, and even learned to climb a little. My good friend Cam Fryer came out to help and belay – anchor the safety rope – for Dan on the last climb. Cam also successfully climbed, but in jeans and running shoes!
